Reality TV has a mental health problem

Abbie Chatfield is no longer an accidental star.

The reality TV personality has gone from being unlucky in love on The Bachelor to taking home the jungle crown on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! and has now landed herself a major gig on radio.

From January 17, Chatfield will broadcast live across Australia as the new host of Southern Cross Austereo’s night time show across 50 Hit Network stations nationally.

It is a major coup for the rising star, who was less than three years ago working a corporate job as a property analyst and has a degree in property economics.

“I never thought I would get a gig this huge only two years into a kind of accidental career,” Chatfield told The Daily Telegraph.

“I am excited to be real on the show. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t s..ting myself. I haven’t been sleeping I am so scared because I want to do it properly.”

Hot Nights with Abbie Chatfield will run weeknights from 7pm to 9pm, covering popular culture and celebrity interviews. She replaces Ash London, who recently had her first child.

Chatfield scored the job after proving herself on hit podcast, It’s A Lot.

“Abbie is truly an exciting and refreshing new talent with a huge, growing national audience, who are already glued to her compelling and brutally honest podcast,” SCA executive Dave Cameron said.

Chatfield is known for standing her ground, sharing her views on issues ranging from the global pandemic and vaccinations to equality, reality television, celebrities and politics.

It is her candid style that has won her fans here and internationally.

“Radio is a very specific skill and I am going to be learning on the job,” she said.

“This is life changing. I have an inability to just shut up. I have a need to talk about things and I share that with people. I have never changed who I am and a lot of it is a stream of consciousness. I guess I am like a lot of people’s friend, if that makes sense.”

She added: “I think there is this false perception of me. It is not that I am overly sure of myself or confident, it is more that I just have acceptance about who I am and I don’t feel pressure to change that unless I do something horribly wrong.”

An important lesson Chatfield has learnt through social media and hosting the podcast is to “take a breath before responding to people”.

Fame too is taking some getting used to. Chatfield, 26, recently appeared on her Instagram stories crying after her home address was shared online.

“The least favourite thing about my job is the actual fame because I think I am in a really weird spot in Australian media,” she said. “I am not a Hemsworth but I am not just a Bachelor person anymore. It is a hard thing to navigate.”

As for her personal life, Chatfield is madly in love with Konrad Bien-Stephen, who was a contestant on the last season of The Bachelorette. The relationship created a rift with star of that show, Brooke Blurton and she and Chatfield were friends.

“It is bizarre because I never thought I would find someone that loves me as much as I love them,” she said. “It has been crazy. It is just so nice.”
