News presenter Angie Asimus’ baby girl came right on teleprompter cue.
Six-month-old Scarlett Abbott came early, on her mother’s final day of work at Martin Place, where Channel 7’s headquarters had been for the last 19 years.
Until last week, when Asimus returned from maternity leave for the historic first broadcast at the brand new Eveleigh studios.
“I didn’t really get to say goodbye,” Asimus told Confidential.
“I had packed up my desk and had a little box there which was very sad, but I kind of expected that when I left I wouldn’t be going back.”
Asimus is one of five reporters at the station who have all welcomed new additions within a few months of each other, sparking an impromptu mother’s group.
“They say one is one, and two is ten and that’s about right,” she joked. Her son Austin is three.
The weather presenter said while she loves the new space, it’s hard not to be emotional about “the big change”.
“Martin Place is really special for all of us because it’s so visible. Everybody who has been in the city has probably peeked through the window and seen the news go to air,” Asimus said. “And I did my high school work experience in that newsroom, which is where I decided I wanted to be a journalist.”
The advice she got was “encouraging but practical”: It’s really hard work, there is nothing glamorous about this, and you’ll probably have to get your first job away from Sydney if you really want it.
“Which is exactly what happened,” the 37-year-old said.
Coming back to work is daunting for any mother.
“Not only do you worry you’ll be really rusty live on air, but it’s also a whole new newsroom,” she said.
“It was funny because that was the energy that we all felt, so I wasn’t on my own in that.”
She added that Austin has coped with his ‘dethronement’ as a former only child, and is really attentive to his new sibling.
“My son was really very outgoing from the outset and extremely a wakeful child. His resting face was usually frowning. A real chatterbox and so curious,” Asimus said.
“My daughter is really chilled, so smiley and happy. They’re really different, but it’s been lovely watching their relationship grow.”
