TEEN suicide and cyber-bullying are not easy issues to tackle in a mainstream television series, but 13 Reasons Why stars Alisha Boe and Christian Navarro say they have been blown away by the impact the show has had on teens.

“I had no idea how profound it would be to so many people,” said Navarro, in Sydney with Boe yesterday ahead of appearing on the Netflix Australia float in tonight’s Mardi Gras parade.

“It’s been one of the greatest privileges of my life to meet young people who have been impacted and changed for the better because of this show.”

Boe said criticism of the content, which follows the suicide of character Hannah Baker, played by Australian actor Katherine Langford, is understandable.

“It’s a very touchy subject and I understand why there would be concerns, but if we’re not having the conversation out in the open and we’re not thinking about why all these teenagers are connecting with the subject matter so deeply, then we’re not making a difference.”

The pair are in town to appear on the Netflix Australia float during tonight’s Mardi Gras parade.

“I keep being told how amazing Australia is at partying so I can’t wait,” added Boe.
