IF INTERNATIONAL girl of the moment Katherine Langford was hoping for a low-key departure from Sydney yesterday, her fans weren’t having a bar of it.
The 21-year-old — who this time last year was an unknown from Perth — has skyrocketed to worldwide It Girl status after being hand-picked from obscurity to star in hit US series 13 Reasons Why, and now can’t move without her fans queuing for an autograph.
She’s friends with Selena Gomez, who produced the show, and has had the US in the palm of her hand, appearing on talkshows such as Ellen and Jimmy Fallon.
Jetting back into Sydney for just two days this week, she was mobbed by fans.
“It is overwhelming but in a good way,” she said of the show’s success.
“It is terrific. I always love coming home. It is really great.”
Langford seemed thrilled, yet slightly taken aback, as she was greeted by fans outside her hotel early yesterday. At the airport, photographers were already waiting for her.
One fan had been waiting outside the QT hotel on Market St with her children from 4.30am, eager to catch a glimpse of the star.
It was a similar scene at the airport when Langford flew in to Sydney late Wednesday night.
The series became a worldwide hit for its boundary-pushing examination of teenage suicide. Langford plays lead character Hannah Baker, who leaves behind a box of audiotapes detailing the “reasons” why she kills herself.
The show has been a worldwide smash — but was also dogged by controversy, with experts warning it glamorised self-harm.
It has already been renewed for a second season, which Langford will begin filming soon.
