Sarah Harris says she is in a “good space” after her recent separation — but has revealed there are still days so bad she cries driving home from her high-profile TV job.
The popular host of Studio 10 morning show and husband Tom Ward announced their split last month.
“Tom and I adore our kids, we just love them and they come first,” she said, addressing the split publicly for the first time.
“I am not the first woman to do this and I certainly won’t be the last.
“You just have to be organised and everything has to run with military-like precision.
“It is not to say that there aren’t days where I get in the car and cry the whole way home and think, ‘that was a waste of makeup’.
“On the whole, though, I am doing pretty good.”
Harris, 39, is mum to three-year-old Harry and five-year-old Paul. She and IT specialist Ward were married in 2014.
She spoke to The Daily Telegraph as she announced her ambassadorship for Blackmores, spearheading its push for Aussie mums to focus on their immune health through winter.
“I am a better mum when I am a happy and healthy so I am focusing on my health,” she said. “Mums have to take time for a little bit of self care. I think the word self care has been hijacked, people think that it is about massages and facials and that kind of thing, but it is actually just making sure you nourish your body properly.
“For me, exercise is less about maintaining weight and so much more about my headspace.
“If I miss regular exercise, my head is a complete mess, I don’t function and I am not on top of my game.”
Harris will celebrate a milestone birthday later this year, turning 40. So far, due to the global pandemic, she has not made any plans.
“I will do a nice day with my boys somewhere, I’d like to take them away, head bush or something like that, but it is not going to be a huge party.”
Harris also addressed the issue of women ageing in the entertainment game.
“Every woman has the bully in their head that is constantly telling them that they are not good enough, not thin enough, not pretty enough,” she said.
“I think the older I get the better I am at harnessing that voice in my head.
“I don’t feel immense pressure, sure I have had a bit of Botox, I’ve certainly softened my stance on that.
“I think your priorities change as you get older and so I spend more time worrying about if my boys are OK rather than the size of my bum.
“That’s not to say there aren’t days where I beat up on myself, I think all women do, but they are getting fewer and further between.”
HOLD ON A SECORD, HONEY
When long-serving Labor MP Walt Secord fired off a missive announcing his resignation from shadow cabinet, NSW Opposition Leader Jodi McKay wasn’t the only person who was taken by surprise.
Secord also forgot to tell his fiance, Julia, who was reportedly “quite alarmed” at her partner’s sudden resignation.
But while Secord might be in the doghouse as far as the Labor leader is concerned, there are no such issues at home.
“She gives me the benefit of the doubt much more often than I deserve,” Secord said of his partner.
Meanwhile, Labor’s leadership woes this week have been a boon for anonymous Twitter accounts spreading rumour and gossip.
One joke account, long rumoured to be run by a former Liberal operative, has been revived, posting memes about leadership aspirants, to the amusement of many.
A new account, dubbed “Gossip Girl #nswpol” initially suggested that McKay would quit as leader, before speculating on potential candidates for Labor’s reshuffled shadow cabinet.
Predictions from Macquarie Street’s self-described Gossip Girl were hit and miss: One observer joked that the only thing the account got right was the soup of the day at the parliamentary cafe.
The account went quiet on Wednesday night, leading to speculation the account’s owner had been discovered.
SHARK CALLS ON NRL STARS TO ‘GIVE BACK’
Cronulla Sharks star Ronaldo Mulitalo has called on his fellow NRL players to do more to give back to their community.
The 21-year-old ambassador for Stepping Stones House was the Sharks nominee for the Ken Stephen Medal, which acknowledges the work players do off the field for charities and the community.
He says that the work he does with the organisation that gives displaced young people a safe home with educational and employment opportunities, is by far the most important work of his life and called on players to get more involved with charities.
“I never want to finish my career and be known just as a footballer,” Mulitalo told Confidential. “As players, we can lose our way in the lifestyle that we live. Yes, we work hard for this lifestyle, but when a charity comes out it’s important we use our social standing to help. We can play a bigger part in the community.”
“Rugby League players aren’t perfect, we are human at the end of the day but there is space to be filled to use our status for better.”
Mulitalo has teamed up with Asics and JD Sport to draw more attention to Stepping Stone House. As someone who had a tough upbringing, he wants to set an example.
“I was raised by a single mother, with my dad not really in the picture. He had his own worries and troubles,” he said.
“I lived in a leaky garage with my two brothers in not the best neighbourhood, but it was home.
“My mum was a strong, powerful women and she raised us boys.
“She was my superhero, now it’s my turn to be a superhero and help others.
“I had a tough upbringing but there are a lot of people who have had it tougher than me, which is a scary thought. So helping out is my priority.”
