Social media sensation draws major attention from record labels

TikTok has done the trick for rising teenage singer Esha Tewari, who now has over 100 record labels competing for her attention.

Being chronically online has paid off for rising star Esha Tewari, who now has record labels competing for her attention.

Having only started singing four years ago, the 18-year-old has already attracted offers from more than 100 record labels.

“At the moment it’s a quieter period, but I still get at least one email a day,” Tewari told The Daily Telegraph.

Rising to fame by sharing her singing videos on TikTok, Tewari now boasts more than 246,000 Instagram followers and says social media has revolutionised the path to success for emerging artists.

“With the internet, you don’t need radio to do anything for you,” she said.

“Radio has its value, but it’s unfortunately slowly dying and losing it’s worth to social media and Spotify … now it’s up to artists to shape their own paths.”

While she’s proud of her roots, Tewari prefers not to be confined by the label of “Australian artist”, fearing it limits her global reach.

“There is a little bit of a glass ceiling when it comes to being an Australian artist,” she said.

“When you have so much success in Australia sometimes it doesn’t translate into a global scale and that’s not what I want to identify with.

“I have a lot of American friends who had never heard of Missy Higgins, which is crazy to me because she is our Aussie icon.

“It doesn’t make her less successful but she is confined to that label and doesn’t have that global reach.”

Currently signed to Warner Music, this year Tewari plans to tour internationally and release her new EPs.

With her upcoming Australian tour already selling out, Tewari is set to perform at The Underground in Ultimo on April 5.
