Aussie DJs are taking the world by storm, but rising star CYRIL says the fast-paced lifestyle can take a serious toll on mental health.
CYRIL, who will be headlining the after the last at the upcoming TAB Golden Slipper Day plans to add his signature touch of gold to the event, with fans expected to groove to his hit tracks “Stumblin’ In” and “The Sound of Silence”— both boasting over 410 million streams each.
“I love performing at the races,” CYRIL told The Daily Telegraph.
“Everyone really gets into it, and it’s going to be a great time. There’ll be plenty of singalongs, so get ready.”
With 19.4 million monthly Spotify listeners, CYRIL is part of a wave of talented Aussie DJs, including superstars Dom Dolla, Flume, FISHER, Havana Brown, and Brooke Evers, who are in high demand and constantly booked.
As his career continues to soar, the 27-year-old Darwin-based artist finds himself on the road frequently, only able to see his partner and one-year-old son less than once a month.
“It’s really hard and I try to come home as much as I can.”
The pressures of touring and performing, CYRIL explains, can be overwhelming. “The job takes a huge toll on your mental health, physically and emotionally. Sometimes I do four shows a week — it’s so much fun but incredibly exhausting.”
“In the DJ world, there are hardly any egos. We all look out for each other,” CYRIL shared.
“Although we talk about mental health sometimes, we don’t do it as often as we should. It’s rare for someone to fall so hard that it leads to something tragic, but we’re always there for one another.”
“It’s important to stay grounded,” he added.
“You have to be kind, because the DJ community is a great group of people. No one has a big ego.”
Despite his gruelling schedule, CYRIL admits he’s not a fan of taking time off and with his demanding lifestyle, the DJ often loses track of time.
“It’s a mentally challenging job, but also really rewarding.“
“I never know what day it is anymore. You just stop worrying about everything around you.”
CYRIL will be playing at Rosehill Gardens on March 22.
