Come opening night of Hamilton — the rap musical about US founding father Alexander Hamilton — the Australian cast will be in crinolines, wigs, breeches and top boots.
But the 10 principal performers wore everything from Fendi and Prada to Armani and Bulgari when Vogue Australia whisked them off for a high fashion photo shoot.
And the look, to be revealed when Vogue hits the stands on March 8, could hardly be more different from the 18th century Hamilton costumes whose creation has taken months.
Wearing the gorgeous couture in Vogue’s pictures are Jason Arrow (in the lead role of Alexander Hamilton), Lyndon Watts (Aaron Burr), Chloe Zuel (Eliza Hamilton), Akina Edmonds (Angelica Schuyler), Matu Ngaropo (George Washington), Victory Ndukwe (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), Shaka Cook (Hercules Mulligan/James Madison), Marty Alix (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton), Elandrah Eramiha (Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds) and Brent Hill (King George III).
The shoot took place on a boiling mid January day at The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan.
“It was the photo shoot of a lifetime,” Edmonds said.
For Ndukwe, the Hamilton costumes are just as special. When he tried on Jefferson’s big purple coat, a lot of things came together for him.
“I had a moment where I looked in the mirror and the character just kind of jumped out at me,” he said.
Hamilton The Musical makes its Australian premiere at the Sydney Lyric Theatre from March 17; tickets are available only at ticketmaster.com.au
