Olympic sensation Raygun is still making waves across the world.
Despite major controversy at the Paris games, Olympic breakdancer Raygun (Rachel Gunn) has become this year’s hottest Christmas decoration following other “wild” decor like windscreen wipers, Halloween costumes and even tattoos.
“It is totally wild, I love all of the creativity, and the interpretations and the things that it has sparked off,” Gunn told Confidential as she attended the GQ Men of the Year Awards in association with Defender.
“I have already seen Christmas decorations, I’ve seen a Raygun nutcracker and Raygun baubles … some of these are really nice and I want some, if they’re gonna use my image to use these beautiful things, can they at least give me some free copies and maybe some royalties.”
Gunn in August attempted to trademark the name Raygun by way of capitalising on her Olympics performance.
The application to register the name was submitted on August 23 with the Australian trademarks office with the intent of using ‘Raygun’ in things like clothing, entertainment and software. It was denied.
The 37-year-old sent social media into a frenzy after “bombing” her performance at the Paris games with claims she did not take her Olympic debut seriously.
The dancer was the Australian representative for the first-ever Olympics women’s breakdancing competition where she made “breaking” one of the most talked-about sports.
She scored zero.
Rumours and criticism of her performance spread globally, with Gunn receiving a torrent of violent messages, which eventually led to her retirement from the sport.
Superstar singer Adele also stopped her Munich concert midway during the Olympics to rave about Gunn’s performance which she called the “best thing that has happened at the Olympics”.
Despite the rollercoaster ride of public scrutiny, Gunn is enjoying the perks of her new-found fame.
“I don’t take myself too seriously, that doesn’t mean I don’t work hard. I try to find those moments of joy,” she said.
Alongside husband, fellow breakdancer Samuel Free on the red carpet, Gunn said he was her man of the year.
“He has been absolutely phenomenal supporting me leading up to the games and then he thought he would get a break after that, no way it’s still all about me,” Gunn added.
Unable to describe the emotions of the year, Free also told Confidential, “I’ll let you know when I can put an emotion to that, people say it’s a rollercoaster but it’s more like a pinball machine.”
