Veteran chef Neil Perry’s Double Bay bistro Margaret has been named the second best steak restaurant in the world.

The World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurant list has been revealed, with Perry’s Margaret rising from its No.3 position last year, to come in at No.2.

The judges deemed only Parrilla Don Julio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as better. It came in first for the third year in a row.

The list, which has become the bible for steak lovers around the world and reviews more 900 restaurants, named 16 other Australian restaurants in the top 101.

Ten of the 17 in Australia are located in NSW.

Perry’s former restaurant Rockpool was the second best Australian venue on the list, coming in at No.12, compared to No. 8 last year.

Newly opened The International debuted at No. 14 on the list, while Firedoor made its debut at 16.

Argentinian restaurant Porteno was No. 20, The Gidley was No. 32, while Middle Eastern restaurant Aalia was No. 36.

Shell House, The Cut Bar and Grill, 20 Chapel and Bistecca were also all in the top 100.

However, The Gidley and Bistecca, both did slip down the list compared to last year’s rankings.

In a statement, the 67-year-old Perry said he was “thrilled” at the achievement — especially considering Margaret, which Perry named after his late mother and opened in 2021, was originally marketed as a seafood restaurant.

“For our family-run restaurant to receive this recognition is an incredible honour,” Perry said.

“It’s a testament to the passion we’ve poured into our meat program — from working with exceptional producers like Blackmore wagyu and CopperTree Farms to ensuring every cut served is perfectly dry-aged and cooked.

“It’s also fantastic to see 17 Australian restaurants featured on the list this year, a reflection of the outstanding quality of our beef producers.”

Perry’s award-winning steak costs anything from $69 for a 220g CopperTree 60-month friesian fillet with red curry butter and grilled shallots, to $370 for the David Blackmore pasture-fed rhone bone-in sirloin.
