One of the UK’s most successful groups of all time are reuniting for a tour “in celebration” of their bandmate who tragically died in 2021.

Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Tweedy, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh will return to the stage as Girls Aloud in memory of their late member, Sarah Harding, who tragically lost her battle with breast cancer in 2021.

Claiming the title of most successful girl group of the noughties, the band have sold in excess of five million albums in the UK and still hold the Guinness World Record for their 20 consecutive UK Top 10 singles.

Tweedy, who went on to become a huge solo star after Girls Aloud split and managed to score four UK Number One singles, told the BBC: “The anniversary seemed like an obvious thing that we would celebrate. But when Sarah fell ill all priorities changed. She passed away a year before the anniversary and it just didn’t feel right, it felt too soon.”

“It’s the right time to celebrate Sarah, it’s the right time to celebrate the band and the right time to celebrate the fact we can still do this 21 years later. That’s a big honour in lots of ways.”

Walsh added: “For us, it will feel very much like she’s there. She came alive on stage. That was the happiest she ever was. With grief, there’s definitely a shift where it’s like, ‘OK, you’re ready to celebrate that person.’”

The tour is set to take place in May to June next year, starting in Dublin and stopping in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Glasgow and Liverpool.

Girls Aloud formed in 2002 on ITV reality show Popstars: The Rivals, and their critically acclaimed debut single, Sound of the Underground, which is regularly lauded by critics as one of the best girl group singles of all time, became the first of four UK Number Ones.

The band went on a hiatus in 2009 to concentrate on solo projects and later reunited in 2012 to release Greatest Hits album, Ten, before splitting for good.
