RECLUSIVE Australian band The Avalanches will reform for this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival.
The Melbourne band, who have not released an album since 2000s Since I Left You, will play their only Australian show at the event in Byron Bay held between July 22 and 24.
However mystery surrounds who remains in the band — with Splendour promoters admitting they’re not sure what line-up will play their event.
DJ Dexter, considered to be the architect behind the thousands of samples used to create Since I Left You and hit Frontier Psychiatrist, and Darren Seltmann, who had been the band’s original vocalist during their early punk phase, have both exited the band.
That leaves the current line up as original members Robbie Chater and Toni Di Blasi, while James De La Cruz, who joined the band in 1999, has rejoined. Their Facebook page also mentions a mysterious fourth member called Mutual Attraction.
The last Avalanches appearance was a DJ set at Vivid Festival in Sydney in 2011 and while they have long teased a second album, their last musical output was a remix of Hunters and Collector’s Talking to a Stranger in September 2013.
Splendour’s Jess Ducrou told News Corp today she and fellow festival boss Paul Pitticio have asked the Avalanches to play their event “pretty much every year” since the festival began.
“This year, to our absolute surprise, they said yes. We don’t really have any more details to share about their performance at this stage but we are beyond excited that we’ll have them exclusively at Splendour In The Grass 2016.”
The Avalanches today also announced festival shows in Spain and London in June, before their first Australian show at Splendour.
Also playing exclusive Australian shows at Splendour this year will be New York rock band The Strokes and Iceland’s Sigur Ros.
Iconic UK band The Cure will also headline — one of the names that the rumoured line-ups flying around this month got right. There is no sign of Radiohead and Lana Del Rey, which fans put on fake gig posters.
Also confirmed are Flume, Courtney Barnett, Tegan and Sara, James Blake, At the Drive-In, Violent Soho, Santigold, The 1975, Jake Bugg, Band of Horses, Matt Corby, Hermitude, Leon Bridges, James Vincent McMorrow, Years and Years, The Kills, Boy & Bear, Peter Bjorn and John, DMAs, City Calm Down, Sticky Fingers, Duke Dumont, The Preatures, What So Not, Gang of Youths, Illy, Mark Lanegan, Michael Kiwanuka, Jawar Ma, Jack Garratt, Robert Forster, Urthboy, Methyl Ethel and many more.
The venue is North Byron Parklands, Tweed Valley Way, Wooyung (15 minutes north of Byron Bay). Tickets will be $375 for the three day event, with single day tickets a $159.
A camping ticket is $120 plus fees.
Tickets go on sale 9am Thursday April 21 through Moshtix.
