Outraged Aussies brand this year’s Hottest 100 ‘worst in history’

This year’s Triple J’s Hottest 100 has left many listeners fuming, with some even branding it the “worst” countdown of all time.

Flume has taken out the top spot at the annual triple j hottest 100 battle of the charts

This year’s Triple J’s Hottest 100 has come to an end and, unfortunately, not everyone has been impressed with the line up of songs that made it into the countdown.

It kicked off at 12pm AEDT and finished just before 8pm, with Australian artist Flume taking out the number one spot with his song Say Nothing (ft. MAY-A).

“I did not expect this. It’s just really, really cool. Yeah, I’m shocked,” the Aussie artist told Triple J.

“I grew up listening to the Hottest 100 and it’s kind of been a part of my life and childhood. I hate to use the word but it is surreal, it really is surreal.”

While it is always exciting to see an Australian artist take out the top position, not everyone was impressed by this year’s countdown – and they weren’t shy about voicing their opinions.

Every year there are going to be people that complain about certain songs that should have been higher or lower, or ones that should not have made the cut at all.

It is also almost guaranteed there will be someone complaining about the fact that they don’t know any of the songs and it was “better back in my day”.

The point is, complaints are inevitable, but this year there appeared to be a lot more disgruntled listeners than usual.

The first real grievances started rolling in when US rapper Machine Gun Kelly made it onto the countdown at #69 with his song maybe [Ft. Bring Me The Horizon].

Listeners branded the inclusion “upsetting” and “a travesty”, with one person questioning: “Who let this man on the Hottest 100?”.

And that wasn’t the only artist people took issue with, with others lamenting the inclusion of Beyonce and Drake in the countdown.

One person suggested that those artists shouldn’t even be played on Triple J, while another said they were “so disappointed” Australia voted to put Drake on the countdown.

Others claimed artists like Beyonce didn’t “belong” in the Hottest 100, with others saying her inclusion “just feels wrong”.

Both Drake and Beyonce featured twice in the countdown, with the former coming in at #76 and #44, while Queen Bey came in at #42 and #24.

As the countdown continued, the complaints began to pile up, with many social media users starting to blast the Hottest 100 in its entirety, rather than taking issue with individual songs.

Aussies branded this year’s countdown “unoriginal”, “genuinely embarrassing”, “garbage” and “just plain bad”.

Shockingly, there were multiple people who claimed the countdown was the “worst” they had heard.

“This year’s Hottest 100 is garbage – and I never say that – I’m usually screaming it was the best year ever,” one Twitter user said.

The radio countdown did have its defenders sprinkled in among the haters, with some blaming all the complaints on “older Millennials” who have realised the Hottest 100 is no longer targeted at them.

“Nothing funnier than seeing older Millennials realise they have aged out of @triplej‘s target demographic when they don’t know the popular songs in the #hottest100 anymore, and they get upset at songs just existing that high on the list,” one user wrote.

However, these types of posts were few and far between compared to the ones of people complaining about this year’s countdown.
