Aussie artist Flume takes out top spot

Australian artist Flume has come in at number one in this year’s Hottest 100, taking out the top spot with his hit song Say Nothing(ft. MAY-A).

Flume was a favourite to win the countdown, being tipped to take out number one by both SportsBet and prediction site 100 Warm Tunas.

Speaking to Triple J following the win, Flume revealed he was “just so happy” by his song topping the countdown.

“I did not expect this. It’s just really, really cool. Yeah, I’m shocked,” he said.

“I grew up listening to the Hottest 100 and it’s kind of been a part of my life and childhood. I hate to use the word but it is surreal, it really is surreal.”

Listeners split over Hottest 100 outcome

There were plenty of people who were overjoyed by this year’s winner, with one branding Flume “the actual King”.

Another questioned whether it would really be a Hottest 100 without Flume featuring.

However, there were many others who weren’t as happy with the outcome.

One social media user claimed the countdown was “confirmation that Flume remains very overrated”.

Another asked “who the hell” voted for Flume, with another commenter branding the song “bland”.

Hottest 100 debut takes out second place

Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal have taken out the second spot on the Hottest 100, with their song B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All).

This is the first time they have been featured on the countdown.

Aussie song takes out number 3 spot

Aussie band Spacey Jane has taken out the third spot on the Hottest 100 with their song Hardlight.

The band has had a great run, securing three of the top 10 spots in the countdown this year.

More outrage over Beyonce`

Oh boy, if listeners weren’t happy with just ONE Beyonce song being included in the countdown, then they really aren’t happy now that she has taken out a second spot.

The US superstar came in at #24 with her song CUFF IT, sparking another wave of angry social media posts.

Favourite song comes in lower than expected

Aussie band Gang of Youths has surprised listeners by coming in lower in the countdown than many predicted.

Their song in the wake of your leave came in at #8, far lower than the first or second place suggested by prediction site 100 Warm Tunas.

One social media user claimed it was “a crime” that US artist Lizzo came in above Gang of Youths, sitting at #7 with her song About Damn Time.

Countdown reaches top 10 songs

We are at the pointy end of the countdown now folks, with just 10 songs left to play.

Japanese singer-songwriter Joji rang in #10 with his song Glimpse of us.

This is the second #1 hit in Australia to appear in the countdown, following #12 First Class by Jack Harlow.

Hottest 100 blasted for ‘embarrassing’ song inclusion

Another song has sparked controversy among Hottest 100 listeners, with many shocked to see music superstar Beyonce in the mix.

Queen Bey came in at #42 with her hit Break My Soul, but not everyone is happy to see her in the countdown.

This is the second time Beyonce has appeared in the Hottest 100, with the singer coming in at #66 in 2016 with Hold Up.

Not for us’: Millennials lament over Hottest 100

For many, the Hottest 100 is an opportunity to kick back with mates and listen to some great music, but for some Millennials it is proving to be a stark reminder that they are no longer the target audience for this day.

Millennials have been taking to social media to complain that they no longer recognise the music being played in the countdown.

Many have been complaining that they “feel old” listening to today’s countdown, with one TikTok user claiming it “not for us anymore”.

Major wins for Billie Eilish and Florence + The Machine

US singer Billie Eilish and Florence from Florence + The Machine are now tied as the most successful women in the history of the Hottest 100.

Both women have now racked up 15 entries in the countdown.

Hollywood star makes Hottest 100 appearance

We haven’t even gotten through the first 10 songs and already there has been a surprise appearance in the form of a Hollywood movie star.

English actor Idris Elba has come in at #93, collaborating with Aussie brothers Lime Cordiale to create Holey Moley.

In what will likely be an added surprise to many listeners, this isn’t Elba’s first time gracing the countdown, with the Marvel star making the list last year too.

Lime Cordiale and Elba scored two songs, Apple Crumble and What’s not to like, in the Hottest 100 in 2022.

Just one more song in the Hottest 100 and they will have broken the record.

Who is the favourite to win?

Spacey Jane is the only artist to feature twice in the predicted top 10, with Hardlight likely to place between spot four and five and Sitting Up predicted to place between six and 11, according to the site.

Countdown officially kicks off

The Hottest 100 has official begun, with British artist Fred Again getting things started with his hit song Danielle (smile on my face).

Coming in at 99 was US singer Phoebe Bridgers, making her debut on the countdown with her song Sidelines.

At #98 was Bad Memories [Ft. Elley Duhé/Fastboy] by MEDUZA X James Carter, followed by Yung Gravy’s Betty (Get Money).

History of the countdown

The Hottest 100 began in 1988, created by Triple J producer Lawrie Zion.

Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart was the first ever Hottest 100 winner.

According to the ABC, Zion wanted to create a listener poll to determine their 100 favourite songs of all time, inspired by polls run by Rolling Stone magazine.

Through to 1991, the Hottest 100 were votes on ‘all time’ favourite songs.

From 1993, the poll took on the form we now know and love, with listeners voting for their favourite songs of the year.

In 2017, Triple J announced that they would no longer be holding the Hottest 100 on Australia Day, citing the “growing dialogue around Indigenous recognition and perspectives on 26 January”.
