Matildas striker Emily Gielnik describes her wedding day as being just like the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Gielnik married the love of her life, Temica Sayer, in a low-key, wedding on Wednesday.
However, despite it being the best day of her life, Gielnik said it was “stressful as hell”.
“I was extremely anxious,” Gielnik told The Saturday Telegraph from her honeymoon in Bali on Friday.
“Waiting to go down the aisle I was shaking, borderline crying and a bit stressed, but the day couldn’t have gone any more perfectly.
“It was almost like the World Cup. We hoped it would be amazing, but it exceeded expectations.
“It was everything we ever hoped for and much more.”
The disappointment of missing the World Cup due to an ankle injury was alleviated when Gielnik said ‘I do’ to her partner of eight years in front of family and friends, including team-mates Ellie Carpenter, Teagan Micah, Chloe Logarzo and ex-Matilda Amy Chapman.
“Truly the best day of our lives,” the pair posted on Instagram, along with a video of their wedding day.
They also shared numerous photographs of the special day, which took place at coastal wedding venue Osteria, Casuarina, in NSW.
The post read: “Good mornin’ world. Here is a small dose of the 23-8-23.”
After representing the Matildas more than 57 times, Gielnik failed to make the final squad for the recent World Cup due to an ankle injury.
The couple spent Friday in the air on their way to their much-anticipated honeymoon, but the 31-year-old said she might have to cut it short due to a new contract.
