Covid holidays: where Hollywood celebrities are while Australia is stuck at home

Where there’s a celebrity will to travel, there's a way – even during a global pandemic.
While international flights have been largely halted, cruise ships returned to port, cities locked down, and many borders slammed shut since Covid-19 turned life on its head, many celebrities have continued traipsing around the globe on glamorous trips. And now that much of the world is opening back up – Australia aside – social media is awash with stars living their best lives away from their luxury homes.
Some of the most popular destinations visited by the likes of Australian actor Margot Robbie, Hollywood royalty Kate Hudson and pop singer Justin Bieber during the pandemic, include places that, at various points over the past year, have been official coronavirus hot spots.
Among them: New York, Florida, Italy, and Greece. But why do those with fame and fortune appear to be moving around so freely while most Australians can’t even leave their homes, let alone the country, under strict lockdowns?
The simple answer is that they’re already based abroad and are coming and going from places no longer subject to most Covid-19 restrictions – including travel bans – as a result of successful vaccination rollouts. And, well … unlike so many people affected by the pandemic around the world – stars can still afford to splurge on fancy overseas holidays.
CHRISSY TEIGEN AND JOHN LEGEND
Singer John Legend, 42, and wife Chrissy Teigen, 35, – who has recently come under fire after a series of old tweets resurfaced in which she bullied other celebrities – celebrated their daughter Luna’s fifth birthday in the Maldives. The couple took their two children, including son Miles, 2, and Teigen’s mum to the idyllic spot known for its coral reefs and pristine resorts, in April this year. The family reportedly stayed at the exclusive Soneva jani Resort, a five-star favourite of Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk.
KATE HUDSON
Kate Hudson, 42, was recently spotted soaking in some sun on Skiathos Island in Greece with her boyfriend Danny Fujikawa, 35, and two of her children: Bingham, 9, and Rani Rose, 2.
The Oscar-nominee’s Instagram Story also contained a peek into their beach outing, as well as a brief video of Hudson and one of her kids dipping their toes in the ocean.
Not only did the foursome splash around in the water, but Hudson and Fujikawa popped some champagne and the crew snapped a few selfies.
Hudson’s family trip to the Mediterranean comes just before she is due to start filming the Greece-set Knives Out 2.
KATY PERRY AND ORLANDO BLOOM
Katy Perry, 36, and Orlando Bloom, 44, have been showing their 10-month-old daughter, Daisy Dove, some of the Europe’s most beautiful sights, including Greece and Italy.
Bloom’s son Flynn, who he shares with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr, joined the family in Peloponnese where they relaxed by the water in June this year.
Earlier in the month, Perry and Bloom took a gondola ride in Venice, where they exchanged kisses, sipped cocktails and took selfies.
REBEL WILSON
Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson, 41, bade her London flat farewell as she set off for the sandy shores of Palm Beach, Florida in May this year.
“Palm Beach-ing? I think I wanna move to Florida now,” she captioned an image of herself standing in the dunes on Instagram.
Rebel might have spent some time in the sun but she was in the US as a guest of honour at the World Polo Pride event.
Prior to the largely successful vaccine rollout in the US, Rebel also made a trip to New York in September last year. “I love New York so much! Going to get some amazing work done here this week x,” she wrote online.
MARGOT ROBBIE
The ‘Wolf of Wall St’ actor turned up the heat with husband Tom Ackerley, 31, while splashing in the ocean and relaxing in a private cabana on holiday in Puerto Vallarta, Costa Rica in June this year.
Margot Robbie, 30, and Ackerley – who live in Los Angeles – were pictured wrapped in each other’s arms and kissing by the sea during the romantic getaway.
JAMES PACKER
Embattled billionaire James Packer recently took to the seas with a trio of Instagram models on board his $200m superyacht in Mykonos, Greece, to soak up the European summer.
Packer’s girlfriend of three-and-a-half years, model Kylie Lim, did not appear in the images, captured in June this year.
The sighting aboard his superyacht IJE marked the first time the 53-year-old has been seen in public in eight months.
JUSTIN AND HAILEY BIEBER
Justin Bieber gave fans an intimate look at his summer getaway with wife Hailey in a series of pictures on Instagram, showing the pair holding hands at sunset and chilling on a boat in Greece.
Though many snapshots from their vacation were captionless, Justin added one selfie where he gushed over his wife: “@haileybieber thank you for being the squishiest most loveable human on the face of the earth,” he wrote on June 28.
One week earlier, the pair travelled to Paris where they met with French President, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife, Brigitte, for an official photo during the country’s annual music festival.
BRITNEY SPEARS
Pop star Britney Spears headed straight for Maui after her sensational mic drop moment in which she appeared in court late June to regale details of her conservatorship and her father Jamie’s “abuse of power” which makes her feel like “she wants to die”.
Spears, 39, was spotted snapping selfies with her boyfriend Sam Asghari, 27, in Hawaii just days after making the statement.
She later shared a video on Instagram of the couple doing a joint workout. “Mental and physical health comes before anything at this point,” she wrote alongside the clip.
