Racing presenter Abbey Gelmi has some advice for racegoers this spring carnival — it’s time to throw out the rule book.

The Seven sports reporter said it was time for an edgier approach to racing fashion including dramatic headwear.

“Everyone is getting adventurous. Seeing the unexpected is what I love. It’s all about having fun,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“(But) you’re not going to a nightclub so you have to dress comfortably. Dress like you could shake someone’s hand but you can also bend the rules as you want and adapt it to yourself.”

The Australian Turf Club has loosened up the atmosphere at this year’s carnival, with a new Palm Springs-themed precinct at Royal Randwick complete with its own pool. DJs including Set Mo and Yolanda Be Cool will perform poolside.

“It’s something fresh for the ATC and you can expect the unexpected,” she said.

Growing up in Western Australia, the stylish sports fanatic said she felt like she had to choose between working in sport or fashion. Now, she has the best of both worlds.

“Ten years ago someone who worked in fashion couldn’t work in sport. Now you can,” she said.

“I’ve done the hard yards and the interning and sports presenting. So if someone questions why I’m here, I tell them to look at my experience.

“There are no rules anymore. I love seeing people who love sport and love fashion.”

The bride-to-be — who will marry Sky Racing star Ben Way in just under three months — said the carnival was a welcome respite from wedding planning.

“We knew the wedding could never be on a racing weekend. I have five days off before the wedding and (there will be) no honeymoon for us at this stage,” she said.
