Meghan and Harry call for ‘compassion’ amid jet furore

After Meghan and Harry copped a barrage of public criticism over their frequent use of private jets, the royal couple are looking for kinder feedback.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry have taken to Instagram to emphasise the importance of “compassion” after an enduring difficult few weeks in the public eye.

In a post shared by their official Sussex Royal Instagram account, the quote, by the Dalai Lama, reads: “I believe that at every level of society — familial, tribal, national and international — the key to a happier and more successful world is the growth of compassion.”

In a separate post, the royal couple refers to the Dalain Lama as a “spiritual leader” and “man of peace”.

Meghan and Harry have recently been under fire after they took four private jet trips in 11 days, prompting critics to call them hypocrites, given their strong public stance on climate change and environmental issues.

They flew to Ibiza by private jet on August 6 for a six-night break for Meghan’s 38th birthday, and days later flew to Nice on a $A37 million Cessna plane described as the “pinnacle of luxury”.

The couple visited the $A30 million palatial home of Castel Mont-Alban, owned by Sir Elton John, 72, and his husband David Furnish.

The music icon defended the couple publicly after a widespread backlash, revealing he paid for the royals to fly to and from his Nice mansion by private jet for a holiday “inside the safety and tranquillity of our home”.

“I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death,” the star added.

Indeed, many of the couple’s fans praised the message of “compassion”, calling the quote “beautiful” and “100 per cent true”.

“So true it should be with compassion that we lead our lives every day,” another fan wrote, while a further agreed: “What we need most in this world is love, compassion and peace! Blessings to you and family.”

Indeed, the public response was infinitely better than last month’s “hypocritical” message, which urged people to “do your little bit of good”.

In that Instagram post, they shared a quote from Archbishop Desmond Tutu which read: “Do YOUR little bit of GOOD where YOU ARE; it’s THOSE LITTLE BITS of good put TOGETHER that OVERWHELM the WORLD.”

That post kicked off a storm of criticism, with one person writing, “How about you do your little bit of good and stop taking flights on private jets?”

Another soon added: “How about less gas guzzling air travel!!!”
