Lily Allen’s new husband David Harbour has previously talked candidly about his struggles with bipolar, saying he felt like he was “connected to god” and was committed to a “mental asylum”.

In 2018, Harbour, 45, talked candidly on a podcast about his struggles with the affective disorder, saying during a difficult period in his 20s he was put in a “mental asylum”.

“Here’s the interesting thing, which I’ve actually never truly spoken about publicly,” Harbour told Marc Maron on WTF.

“I actually was in this Catholicism thing … and I was sober for like a year and a half, I was 25, and I actually did have a manic episode and I was diagnosed as bipolar,” the Stranger Things star said.

“I really had like, a bit of a break where I thought I was in connection to some sort of God that I wasn’t really in connection to,” Harbour said. “It was like I had all the answers suddenly.”

Harbour said he wasn’t doing drugs or drinking at the time, and was eventually put in a facility by his family.

“No drugs. The interesting thing about it is that I realised I don’t need (drugs),” Harbour said.

“I have a capacity to see the elves in the corners of the room if I really allow myself to go there.

“I was taken by my parents to a mental asylum and I have to say one thing about the mental asylums: Being in a mental asylum is really not as fun as you think … it winds up being sad. “It smells like sh*t. It’s horrible.”

Harbour said he’d been taking psychiatric medication ever since the incident.

“The funny thing about my brain is every time I’ve had an episode like that, it’s coupled with spirituality,” he said.

“Generally, people are like ‘I need to meditate more’ or ‘I need to get into yoga’.

“I’ve been medicated for bipolar for a long time. I’ve had a struggle going on and off the medications. You think you’re not the artist you could be. Let’s open this baby up!

“The minute I get close to that flame of the answers, the mysticism, I’m out of my mind,” he said.

Harbour and Allen, 35, recently wed at a tiny ceremony in Las Vegas, officiated by an Elvis Presley impersonator.

The couple were married just a day after TMZ reported they’d purchased a wedding licence, and had a reception at In-N-Out-Burger.

Harbour and Allen first went public with their relationship just over a year ago in August 2019. The public outing came just a few months after Harbour had split with former girlfriend, singer Alison Sudol.

“In a wedding officiated by the king himself, the people’s princess wed her devoted, low born, but kind credit card holder in a beautiful ceremony lit by the ashen skies courtesy of a burning state miles away in the midst of a global pandemic,” Harbour wrote on Instagram, sharing photos of the wedding.

“Refreshments were served at a small reception following.”
