With rumours that cheating allegations played a role in Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler’s decision to divorce, an insider has revealed what really happened.

Affair allegations between Jay Cutler and one of Kristin Cavallari’s pals may have led to the demise of the women’s friendship, but it reportedly was not the catalyst for the couple’s decision to divorce.

“Kristin and Jay had been having problems for a long time. They hadn’t spent much time together in recent months … Kristin and Jay are a lot different,” a source told People, noting the break-up had “absolutely nothing to do” with the speculation of infidelity.

During the season three premiere of Very Cavallari earlier this year, Cavallari said she had not spoken to friend Kelly Henderson in months following rumours about her involvement with Cutler.

In January, Cavallari told Page Six she was trying to “wrap her head around” the situation as production for season three got under way.

On Monday, Cavallari, 33, and Cutler, 36, announced their divorce after seven years of marriage, posting a joint statement to their respective Instagram pages. The Uncommon James jewellery brand founder, who married Cutler in 2013, has already scrubbed “wife” from her bio.

“With great sadness after 10 years together we have come to a loving conclusion to get a divorce,” their statement read. “We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of. This is just the situation of two people growing apart.”

On Monday, it was reported Cavallari accused Cutler of “inappropriate marital conduct” in divorce papers, which were obtained by TMZ. A rep for Cavallari declined to comment on the report.

Cavallari is seeking primary custody of the couple’s three children – sons Camden, 7, and Jaxon, 5, and 4-year-old daughter Saylor – with Cutler receiving visitation rights, while the former NFL quarterback wants joint custody.

Cutler alleged in his filing that he “has always been the available at-home parent and the primary caretaker,” according to TMZ, while Cavallari “denies that (Cutler) has always been the available at-home parent and primary caretaker.” She claims to be the “primary residential parent”.

On Tuesday, TMZ reported Cavallari was “surprised” Cutler filed first, citing sources. Cavallari listed April 7 as the date of separation, per the site, while Cutler noted April 21.

Earlier this month, Cavallari and Cutler returned to the US following a three-week quarantine in the Bahamas, where they were vacationing with hairstylist Justin Anderson and his fiance, Austin Rhodes. A source told People, “On their recent trip, they already knew they were splitting up.”

“The reason they announced it now is because it’s a quiet time for them to work through all of this and try to move forward,” the source said.
