A young US social media star has broken his silence amid intense backlash over a shocking car crash he was involved in.

Streamer Jack Doherty broke his silence after crashing his $300,000 new McLaren 570S, losing control on a wet road.

The social media star sparked backlash after it emerged that he was reportedly streaming at the time.

The footage appeared to show he was holding and looking at his phone before the crash.

In a post on Twitter in which he shared a picture of himself shirtless at the scene of the accident, Doherty apologised to his friend who was injured in the accident.

“Going to post a more detailed response today but it’s been 24 hours since the accident and I just want to say how grateful I am that Michael and I are alive,” he tweeted.

“I’m so sorry Michael for putting you thru that. Thank you to all the first responders and everyone who helped us get out of the car. This could’ve been so much worse and it’s a huge learning lesson.”

In the shocking footage, two passers-by pulled Doherty out of the window while he continued streaming. He then assessed the damage to his car before running over to check on his friend in the passenger seat who was bleeding from his head and clutching his wrist.

“F**k dude. My f***ing car, holy sh*t no! Are you f***ing kidding me, bro? ... Michael are you good?”

The pair were both taken to hospital where they were treated for their minor injuries.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with fans hitting out at the star for being “reckless”.

“You could’ve killed innocent people on the road, yourself, & the camera man,” remarked one on Twitter.

“You didn’t even stop streaming after the crash and handed the phone to your bleeding friend you almost killed bc you wanted to keep milking the situation for content,” commented another.

A third ranted: “You don’t deserve a platform, you were so irresponsible and completely disregarded everything and even asked your injured friend to keep recording!”

The 20-year-old American YouTuber has since been banned from the platform Kick over the incident. Doherty’s audience was reportedly 185,000 before he was booted off the platform.

A spokesperson for Kick told NBC News it “does not condone illegal activity, which is why we swiftly took action to ban this creator from the platform.”

Doherty has 14.9 million subscribers on YouTube and three million followers on Instagram.
