Today’s News Headlines: Albanese & Dutton face off in second debate

Karl Stefanovic has raised eyebrows after he was pictured at Sydney’s international airport with a peculiar choice of on-flight reading material as he jets off for an overseas Easter getaway.

The Today show host was smiling ear to ear as he was photographed at the airport on Thursday ahead of a family trip to Fiji with his wife Jasmine Yarbrough and daughter, Harper.

The Nine star flew separately to Jasmine and Harper, who left on Wednesday morning.

But while his family weren’t there to keep him entertained on the fight, Stefanovic was seen carrying his brother Peter’s book Hack in a Flak Jacket: Wars, riots and revolutions – dispatches from a foreign correspondent, written nine years ago.

The book, published in 2016, details his brother’s experience as Channel 9’s foreign correspondent in Europe, the US and Africa.

Stefanovic’s holiday comes just days after the host accused Peter Dutton and Anthony Albanese of “spending like drunken sailors” during the election campaign.

The Coalition want to make mortgage payments tax deductible for eligible first home buyers for five years and the Labor Party wants to roll out a five per cent deposit scheme for all new entrants. Both policies will cost $10 billion.

Speaking to Mr Dutton on the Today show on Tuesday, Stefanovic noted the Opposition Leader’s “election ego is writing checks your Coalition body can never cash”.

“Continuing to spend like drunken sailors. I mean, when will the spending stop and when will we see how much it’s going to cost? And how are you going to repay it?” he asked.

Mr Dutton responded that he was confident the measures – including a cut to fuel excise – were temporary and targeted to deliver cost of living relief.

“Well, Karl, what we’ve done is exactly the same approach that we took during Covid in relation to temporary measures,” he said.

“That is the fuel excise hits the budget in one year. It’s not recurring, so that it’s built in as an expense every year. The economists like that.”

While in Fiji, Stefanovic is believed to be staying at the exclusive Kokomo Island Resort, where his family have vacationed previously.

One travel site currently offers five-night packages for $18,900pp.

Stefanovic reportedly proposed to Jasmine on Kokomo Island back in 2018.

The host was previously married to journalist Cassandra Thorburn, with whom he shares three children.
