From pop-star, to pool and now the big stage, Cody Simpson has made a surprise career pivot.
After failing to make the Australian Olympic team this year, Simpson has headed back to the entertainment industry, and the 27-year-old has just been unveiled as the lead role of the acclaimed Broadway musical Guys and Dolls.
“I’ve always been interested in musical theatre … I was really excited to look at reading for things again once I retired from swimming, and this fortunately an incredible thing to be coming back into with,” Simpson told The Daily Telegraph.
“Bringing a little bit of that (New York) essence and that energy to hit the shores of Sydney, that’d be awesome.”
The Gold Coast singer will play the lead role of Sky Masterson, which was portrayed by Hollywood icon Marlon Brando in the 1955 film adaptation.
Outside his career, Simpson has enjoyed quality time with his partner, Australian swimming legend Emma McKeon, who also recently retired after bringing home gold at the Paris Olympics.
While it marks the first time the singer has performed in a musical in his home country, the musician made his Broadway debut in New York back in 2018, playing the lead role of Dmitry in the Broadway musical Anastasia.
Fellow Aussie performers Bobby Fox, Jason Arrow and Annie Aitken will be joining Simpson, with the show to debut at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour in March.
