ROB Mills and Andrew de Silva agree that, 18 months after George Michael’s death, they’re helping to realise the British singer/songwriter’s greatest dream.
During his colourful life, Michael was the centre of feverish public interest. What could he expect? He was, after all, an international celebrity.
But all Michael really wanted was for his music to speak for itself, say the two Australian performers who will interpret his songs in two Sydney Opera House concerts called George Michael: Listen to your Heart.
“His prayer was, ‘let me be remembered for my music’. And it’s happening,” de Silva says.
De Silva and Mills, who met years ago on the Melbourne live gig circuit, won’t be trying to imitate George Michael. They’ll be giving their own interpretations of the songs he left behind.
They’ll perform hits like Faith, Praying for Time, Careless Whisper, Kissing A Fool and Freedom. They’ll be joined by other cast members including Logie Award-winning actor and musician Hugh Sheridan and musical theatre favourite Bobby Fox.
A 31-piece orchestra will provide the backing, which the guys love.
“Yes, there are strings and harps. But there’s other moments where it’s just a party,” de Silva says.
