THIS Saturday, art lovers have privileged access to the environment that has fostered one in five winners of the Archibald Prize for portraiture — the National Art School.
NAS Open Day will be a feast of art and related activities, from a major display of work by prominent former students to demonstrations of bronze pouring and a market where students will sell one-off artworks. Visitors can even try sculpting in clay or drawing from a life model.
Artist Gria Shead entered the NAS at the age of 16. Now she among 50 prominent former students with work in the exhibition National Art — Part One. It’s on at NAS Gallery which is open on Saturday too.
All the work in National Art — Part One has been given to the school and will go into its permanent collection. Artists including Kevin Connor, Guy Warren, Ann Thomson, Fiona Hall, Sophie Cape and Juz Kitson have all gifted their works.
Shead says True Kate deals with the inequality of Australian mateship.
“Our history is littered with examples of the archetypal compatriot running out of compassion for those who are not of the right ilk,” Shead says.
“The massacres of indigenous people and the treatment of women, from the convict days till now, are historical facts that have been swept under the carpet until recently.”
NAS Open Day will allow visitors to take a historic tour of the campus (a former jail), speak to students working in their studios, and soak up the art school vibe to a backdrop of music.
