MEET the four young stars who will be playing Charlie in the new stage show Charlie And The Chocolate Factory — and they will be the only children in the cast.
Lucy Maunder, who will play Charlie’s devoted mum Mrs Bucket, said this will set the new show apart from the rest.
“The really exciting thing about this is that the only child actor in the show is Charlie, which I love the idea of,” she said.
“The other Golden Ticket winners are all played by adults and I think that highlighting Charlie as the kid is a really interesting decision that the creative team made.”
The four boys — Oliver Alkhair, Ryan Yeates, Tommy Blair and Xion Jarvis — will share the role of Charlie for the duration of the musical.
Maunder was nominated for a Helpmann Award for her role as Miss Honey in Matilda: The Musical, also based on a beloved Roald Dahl book and she is excited to be a part of this show.
“It was very much a part of my childhood and I adored all of the Roald Dahl books so it is a privilege and an honour,” she said.

In order to mould herself into the ideal Mrs Bucket, Lucy draws inspiration from an important, hardworking figure in her own life — her mother.
“My mum is a pretty big role model. She was back at work, on stage, with me when I was six weeks old. She was a principal soprano for the Sydney Opera. I grew up in the theatre, I grew up in her dressing room and I loved every minute of it and that gave me the confidence to do the same sorts of things with my daughter.”
Lucy believes this year’s show has something for everyone.
“The beauty of the story, as with every Roald Dahl book, is that it appeals to adults and children. There’s that wicked and dark, adult humour that comes into the Roald Dahl stories that I think is unique and quirky and naughty. It has something that will appeal to all age groups.”
