ARTISTS Suzanne Archer and Elisabeth Cummings still live there. Robert Hirschmann got very involved in the life there after helping build the late Roy Jackson’s studio. Ildiko Kovacs spent formative times there, painting with Jackson. And John Peart lived and worked there until his death during a local bushfire.
“There” is Wedderburn, a tract of bushland between Campbelltown and Appin whose landscape has provided a home and nourished the careers of these artists and more.
Former resident Sioux Garside has curated an exhibition of their work, opening at Delmar Gallery on Sunday. But why Raw Wedderburn?
“One of the key characteristics of the artists
I’ve selected is their interest in primal mark-making and that intuitive gestural brush mark,” Garside says.
Garside will be in conversation with Suzanne Archer at Delmar at 3pm on Sunday, July 22.
Wedderburn is set to be rejuvenated when young artist Al Poulet, son of Sydney artist Peter Poulet, moves in to Jackson’s old studio.
