Are big classrooms damaging your child's education?

Maroubra Bay Public School has been named as one of the fastest growing schools across the eastern suburbs and Sydney City region — which its principal has put down to an improved ethos, great teaching and better communication with parents.

An analysis of Federal Government data has revealed the Sydney City and eastern suburbs schools where student numbers have risen the most in the past five years.

The top 10 fastest growing schools are listed below.

Between 2013 and 2018, Maroubra Bay Public School increased by 77.6 per cent from 205 students to 364 students, making it the fourth fastest growing school in the Sydney City and eastern suburbs region. It was also the fastest growing school in southeast Sydney.

Maroubra Bay Public School principal Matthew Ackerman said when he arrived about three-and-a-half years ago a new initiative was just being introduced placing a big focus on respect, care and responsibility.

“I think that has resonated quite strongly with the children, community and staff.”

He added there were other factors behind the growth as well.

“We anticipate having 410 students next year. So we are still continuing growth,” he said.

“I guess there are a lot of factors behind that including good teachers — we have worked hard with getting good teachers in the right classrooms.

“And we have increased our parent communication quite substantially over the last few years through social media and improving our newsletter and I think parents appreciate that.”

He added the reputation of the school had also grown and there were more local parents sending their children to the school.

Dad Tasman Cassim said his daughter Maeya, 9, had been attending the school for four years and loved it.

“The principal Matthew Ackerman has made an enormous difference to the school and has basically turned it around,” he said.

“I think he has brought a real sense of community and a real focus on respect.

“The motto behind the school is respectful, responsible and caring … and there has been a real focus on looking out for your fellow student.”

Because of the growth of the school Mr Cassim has decided to complete a 24-hour Superhero Walk starting on Saturday, September 21, to raise money for a new playground at the school.

Meanwhile, Bourke Street Public School in Surry Hills boasted a 131.9 per cent change from 2013 to 2018, making it the fastest growing school in the entire region.
