While it’s true not all heroes wear capes, Maroubra dad Tasman Cassim certainly isn’t opposed to pulling one on for a good cause.
He started the Superhero Walk in 2015 to raise money for children in need.
At noon on Saturday, September 21, he will begin his fifth Superhero Walk which will see him walk continuously for 24 hours around Heffron Park wearing different superhero outfits.
He plans to change outfits each hour and wear 24 costumes.
Mr Cassim is raising money for Maroubra Bay Public School this year and has set a goal of $24,000, which will go toward funding a much-needed new playground.
“This year I wanted to make a difference to the kids in my area,” Mr Cassim, whose daughter attends the school, said.
“I reached out to the local community and discovered the K-2 students at Maroubra Bay Public School really need a new playground.”
He has already raised more than $5000 for the project.
Community members are encouraged to dress up and join him at Heffron Park between noon and 5pm on the Saturday or 7am and noon on the Sunday.
Some of the costumes he will wear during the walk include Elsa from Frozen, The Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman, Harry Potter, Moana and Captain America.
Mr Cassim, who works at the Black Dog Institute, said he anticipated a few challenges during the 24-hour walk.
“The superhero costumes are not designed for long distance walking and chafing is a real problem.”
He explained he started the Superhero Walk after quitting his job in 2015 and turning to something that helped others.
“I was leading a large sales team in the corporate sector and found myself having panic attacks and suffering from bad anxiety.
“I realised the work I was doing was not helping anyone so I resigned and that year started the Superhero Walk, walking from Wagga Wagga to Narrandera, raising over $3000 for kids in regional NSW.”
Maroubra Bay Public School principal Matthew Ackerman thanked him for his support.
“We’ve grown enormously over the past two years and our younger kids really need their own space to grow and to play.”
Currently there is only a small playground for the pupils to play on at the school.
