The region’s second richest school was The Scots College, in Bellevue Hill, which had a gross income of $200.7 million and the third highest gross income was Trinity Grammar School in Darlinghurst, which made $197.1 million.

While an inner city high school with just 115 enrolments in 2017, Macquarie Grammar School, had the second highest average costs to parents at $36,470.

The 1146-student strong Ascham School, was the third most expensive school, costing parents an average of $35,089.

Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Independent Schools NSW Dr Geoff Newcombe AM, said: “All not-for-profit non-government schools educating students from higher socio-economic backgrounds receive much less government funding than the government schools in the same neighbourhood.”

“They must therefore charge fees to pay their staff (typically, 70 per cent of their operating costs) and fund their operation,” he said.

“School choice is a matter for parents, who make their own judgements about quality and value. Many independent schools have waiting lists for enrolment.”

“This is a reflection of how parents value the education provided by a particular school,” Dr Newcombe said.

It made $2.1 million over the three year period, serving only 20 students in 2017.

It is the indigenous arm of St Andrew’s Cathedral School, described as “a school within a school”.
