Opportunity classes and oversized catchments are a few reasons given to the massive growth in some inner west schools.

An analysis of federal government data has revealed the Inner Western Sydney region schools where student numbers have risen the most in the past five years.

Between 2013 and 2018 enrolment at Glebe Public School has increased by 124.6 per cent, faster than any other school in the region.

According to the latest public data that includes public and private schools, student numbers have grown from 130 to 292, the fastest growth in the region.

The second fastest growing school was Ashfield Public School, where the student body increased by 111.1 between 2013 and 2018. Enrolment numbers grew from 234 in 2013 to 494 in 2018.

In 2019, the number of enrolments increased by 19 to 513 students.

A NSW Department of Education spokesman said the introduction of an opportunity class in 2016 led to Ashfield Public School has made the school an increasingly popular choice in the Inner West.

The spokeperson also said that in late 2017 the catchment boundaries of some schools in the Inner West were changed to match capacity to enrolments.

”Ashfield Public School’s catchment boundary became smaller while nearby Haberfield Public School’s catchment boundary was increased,” the spokesman said.

“Following these changes Ashfield Public School’s enrolments are forecast to remain stable in the short to medium term.”

Over those five years Lewisham Public School had the third biggest enrolment boom in the area 113 more students at the school in 2018 than in 2013 — a 109.7 per cent increase.
