High school dropouts who became millionaires

The agonising wait is over for tens of thousands of students, who found out their fate this morning when university course cut-offs for next year were released.

As in previous years, the prestigious University of Sydney and the University of NSW attracted a large number of the state’s best and brightest who got the elusive perfect Australian Tertiary Admission Rank of 99.95.

But lower scoring students should not be disheartened, with some students with ATARs as low as 18.60 surprisingly getting into university courses.

One student with the top ATAR chose to study a Bachelor of Clinical Science at Macquarie University, where the lowest student admitted has a much lower ATAR of 84.35.

The University of Sydney attracted at least 12 students with the perfect ATAR.

Science and engineering courses were their top pick, with the top students choosing to do their degrees in biomedical engineering, mechatronic engineering, while another opted for a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in space engineering.

Other students opted to study a Bachelor of Arts and Law, Commerce and Law, Engineering and Law, while one chose to study the combined degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.

The University of NSW attracted at least nine students with the perfect ATAR.

One top student enrolled in Double Actuarial Studies, and another did a combined Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science in Advanced Maths.

Another chose a Bachelor of Software Engineering and another did a Bachelor of Computer Science.

According to the UAC website, it is a “highly sought-after course” which “prepares students for the planning, design, implementation, management and maintenance of wired and wireless computer networks.”

A total of 38,000 students were given offers in this round. Those who missed out will get another chance to apply in the January.

UAC General Manager of Marketing and Engagement, Kim Paino said it was not too late to change preferences.

“Many courses still have vacancies so anyone who has missed out on an offer, or missed out on their favourite course, needn’t be disheartened, they’ll have the opportunity to change their preferences for January offers,” she said.

Applicants have until midnight on Sunday 5 January 2020 to change preferences for the next round of offers which will be released on Friday January 10 next year.

** Students are given an ATAR but they may be given extra points because of special equity considerations if they come from a disadvantaged background or if they did well in certain subjects that are relevant to the degree for which they have applied.

The lowest selection rank which include these adjustments for each course are published on UAC’s website. ATAR profiles relate to Year 12 applicants only.
