Almost 50 people were arrested in Sydney on Saturday in an anti-lockdown protest which was quickly extinguished by a massive police operation.
NSW Police Minister David Elliott said the nearly 1500 police officers who worked to snuff out the midday rally were the “blue angels” protecting the city.
At the same time, more than 4000 people participated marched through Melbourne and 1500 people gathered in Brisbane.

About 250 protesters began marching from Victoria Park but police immediately began making arrests.
How was the Sydney anti-lockdown protest planned?
The protest was publicised on social media channels as a “nationwide rally for freedom, peace and human rights”.
But ride-share services were blocked from entering the CBD, train travel was shut down and roadblocks set up as part of a massive police operation.
The protesters were also dealt a blow when protest leader Anthony Khallouf was jailed for his role in organising the anti-lockdown rallies.

Sydney has been in lockdown since June 26. Public confidence has been tested and the highly contagious Delta variant has continued to spread.
The protest came hours after NSW broke a grim national record with 825 new cases and the lockdown in Sydney was extended until the end of September.
