Residents across Greater Sydney will now have to welcome in the New Year with fewer household guests, after a new COVID-19 cluster emerged in the city‘s inner west.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the new restrictions this morning ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations on Thursday night.
From midnight tonight, household gatherings have been reduced to a maximum of five guests across Greater Sydney, which includes Wollongong, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains.
The maximum size for an outdoor gathering has also been reduced to 30 people, down from 50.
“We don‘t want New Year’s Eve to be the cause of a super-spreader,” Premier Glayds Berejiklian said.
“It only takes one person in (a) family gathering to give it to everybody else in the family.”
The changes will remain “until further notice”.
Restrictions for the northern zone of the Northern Beaches remain the same.
For the southern zone household gatherings will be limited to five visitors from within the same zone (including children).
On Monday morning it was announced that spots for the fireworks that were allocated to frontline workers along the harbour were withdrawn.
Only people with existing tickets to venues – with a New Year’s Eve pass through service NSW – will be allowed in the city.
Restrictions on regional NSW will remain unchanged.
On the northern beaches, lockdown restrictions will remain in the northern zone until January 9, and in the southern zone until January 2.
In the northern zone, indoor and outdoor gatherings will be allowed for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day but will be restricted to five guests from within that zone.
In the southern zone, gatherings will be allowed for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day and will now also be restricted to five guests.
No hospitality venues from either zones will be allowed to open on New Year’s Eve except for takeaways.
