How to get your Covid vaccination certificate on your phone

You will need to show proof of vaccination to enjoy the new freedoms being granted to people in NSW. Here’s how to get it.

How to prove you've had your COVID-19 vaccinations

Sydneysiders are ready to lap up their first taste of freedom with outdoor recreation now allowed across the city – but first, many are scrambling to get their paperwork sorted.

With the proposed Service NSW app’s updated version including people’s vaccination status still some weeks away, people are required to show police a Covid-19 digital certificate if they want to enjoy a picnic outdoors.

But how exactly do you download the sought-after ticket to freedom? The Daily Telegraph has compiled a simple step-by-step guide to help you navigate the system.

What Covid vaccinations proof can you get?

Fully vaccinated Australians will automatically get a Covid-19 digital certificate which is generated after they received their second dose of either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines. In addition to this, your vaccination is also recorded in the full immunisation history statement on Medicare.

How do you get proof of your Covid vaccinations?

To access your immunisation history statement or digital certificate you can either log on to Medicare online through MyGov or you can use the Express Plus Medicare mobile app which can be downloaded through the App Store on your phone.

Whether you opt to go online or to use the app, you will need to ensure your Medicare account is linked to your MyGov account and this can be the tricky part.

Here’s how you can link the two:

1. Sign into MyGov, this is the same account most Australians use to do their taxes.

2. After logging in, select Services and then pick Medicare. This will then direct you to several questions that are required to confirm your identity. This includes questions about your last GP visit including the date and location and name of the doctor.

3. Once you answer correctly, your Medicare account will be linked.

Why can’t you link Medicare and your MyGov account?

If you are struggling to link Medicare with MyGov you can also call Medicare helpline and they will talk you through the questions.

Once you’ve confirmed the right answers, they can generate a linking code which can be used to connect the accounts:

1. Call Medicare.

2. Get the linking code.

3. Go to MyGov and click Link a New Service and then choose Medicare.

4. Select I have a Linking Code.

5. Enter the code, your Medicare number, and your Medicare reference number and you’re done.

How do you download your Covid vaccination certificate?

Once you link your accounts you can either download the Covid-19 digital certificate online from the Medicare website, or you can set up the Express Plus app.

For the app:

1. Sign in with your MyGov details and then you can create a PIN number to make it easier to log on and off.

2. Click on Immunisation History.

3. Click View Covid-19 Digital Certificate

4. Click Save Offline or Add to Apple Wallet to save it onto your phone.
