Australians who receive a Covid-19 vaccine will get a tamper-proof vaccine certificate

Every vaccinated Australian can now access a hi-tech digital certificate to prove they have had the jab. Find out how to get yours.

What to expect from COVID post-vaccination

Every vaccinated Australian can now access a hi-tech digital certificate to prove they have had the jab in what will be a crucial ticket back to normal after the pandemic.

Australians who have had both required doses of either Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines have been automatically issued a certificate through their Medicare account, which they can access online and save to a mobile device for easy access.

The certificate features a holographic Australian coat of arms, animated green tick and real-time digital clock, along with a unique document number and the personal details of the vaccine recipient, making it impossible to fraudulently reproduce.

The security elements are similar to the technology used for digital divers licences and ID, which are being increasingly adopted around the country.

Though the federal government has created the certificate, when and how they might be used will be largely up to states and territories.

It is likely the vaccine certificate will allow for easier travel or to grant people access to certain activities with fewer restrictions later in the rollout as more people are fully protected from the virus.

Government Services Minister Linda Reynolds said the new record made it “simple and easy” for people to show their Covid-19 vaccination status.

“The Covid-19 digital certificate makes proof of vaccination accessible anytime, anywhere,” she said.

“We’re also giving people control over the level of vaccination history they share, as the certificate only shows your COVID-19 vaccination status.”

Ms Reynolds said once a person’s GP or the clinic where they received their second dose has reported the full vaccination to officials, it will be immediately accessible through the myGov or Express Plus Medicare app.

“I’m encouraging all Australians to ensure you’ve linked your Medicare account to myGov,” he said.

“Linking Medicare to myGov is simple, and more than 10 million Australians have already completed this process.”

The federal government has also previously indicated people unable to use a digital certificate would be able to get a hard copy from any Services Australia centre.
