Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Tuesday, October 8. The ASX 200 index is  up 0.2 per cent to 8218.20 points at 11.15am AEDT with mining gains offsetting banking declines. Energy stocks are strongest after an overnight oil price surge and Wall Street's falls.

The Aussie dollar is trading near US67.52c.
