Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Wednesday, July 23. The ASX 200 index closed 0.7 per cent higher to 8737.20 points, led by mining and energy gains. Utilities were weakest.

On Wall Street, the S&P 500 rose 0.1 per cent to another record high, the Nasdaq Composite retreated 0.4 per cent, weighed down by chip makers such as Nvidia, and Dow closed 0.4 per cent stronger.

Cryptocurrency giant bitcoin is around $US118,600 at 5.15pm AEST.

The Aussie dollar was trading around US65.75c.
