Also, lockdown residents will soon be fined $200 if they go anywhere without a mask:
Three more Victorians have died from coronavirus, with 363 new cases recorded, while residents of locked down areas will soon face fines if they don’t wear a face mask in public.
Residents of metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire will be made to wear face masks when in public, the state government announced on Sunday.
The new rule will be enforced from 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July, and people defying the rules will face a $200 fine.
It comes after a “concerning” increase in cases in recent days and the lack of people voluntarily wearing masks in public areas where they cannot safely social distance.
Premier Dan Andrews is concealing the potentially contagious:
“I understand this is a big shift and that not being able to see each other’s faces might be confronting,” he said.
“But this virus is incredibly infectious.”
The state government will be publicising instructions for a DIY mask.
Mr Andrews said masks “do not need to be hospital grade”. It can be home made, a scarf or some kind of cloth face covering.
“A scarf will do,” he said.
Shouldn’t be too much of an imposition. Scarves are generally required during even an average Melbourne July.
