Match wits with Australia’s master of medical mismanagement in the guessing game that’s got it all – fast cars, slow politicians, a whole state of hostages and a wicked WuFlu wildfire!

To play, simply nominate in comments the engine capacity you think will be closest to the number of new coronavirus cases Disaster Dan will announce on Friday.

For example, those partial to old Chrysler products may be inclined to pick any of the 215, 245 or 265 cubic-inch range of 1970s straight sixes.

You may go as low as 170, for the original slant six, or anything from Chrysler’s extensive history of V8s: 273, 276, 300, 313, 315, 318, 325, 331, 340, 341, 345, 354, 360, 383, 392, 400, 426 and 440, among others.

Those with a taste for the exotic or oddball are invited to consider Mopar’s 488 cubic inch V10 or pushrod 239 V6.

Holden will soon vanish from our marketplace, much like trust in the Andrews government, but they live on in the Victorian Vehicular Cubic-Inch Coronavirus Challenge.

Many engine sizes are available: 132 (the first Grey motor), 138, 149 (the first Red motor), 161, 173, 179, 186 and 202. That’s it for the sixes.

Locally built or installed V8s provide these options: 253, 304, 308, 344 and 350.

Alternatively, go Stateside, where parent company GM offers a crazy variety of bent eights. The Cadillac division alone stretches from 244 to 500, with 16 further choices in between.

Ford kicks off with the 144 and 170 Pursuit sixes, swings through the 200 and 250 sixes of the 70s and 80s, then gives us V8s ranging from 136, 211, 239, 255, 260, 279, 289, 302, 332 and 337 then all the way up to 351, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428, 429 and 460.

If Dan gets things really wrong, readers may ponder the 1100ci Ford GAA tank engine.

Select your pandemic propulsion, punters. Or choose an engine of your own. Anyone can play, even Europeans!

UPDATE. Ford's 302 now added. Apologies to Windsor enthusiasts for the initial oversight.

UPDATE II. Looks like we’re going big:

Victoria is bracing for another record-breaking number of coronavirus cases today, with more than 400 new cases expected to be announced.

Watch live as Daniel Andrews fronts the media from 11.30am.

UPDATE III. 428 new cases. Anders nailed it:

I had a R code T5 (Mustang) in Sweden back in 81 to 83 and it had a 428 so I will go with that.
