TROUBLED tennis great Bernard Tomic freely admits to wasting the past year, but says he’s back on the court with a new attitude and training regimen and plans to break into the international top 30 within the next 12 months.

Only weeks after throwing in the towel by declaring “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” and exiting the South African jungle, Tomic was reunited with Daily Telegraph entertainment reporter Jonathon Moran in a special edition of online radio show Miranda Live.

LISTEN TO THE FULL INTERVIEW:

He told Moran his abrupt departure from the reality TV was a result of him realising he needed to be back out on the court.

“I doubted myself a few times before I even got to the jungle and when I did get there, I realised I needed to get out ... and get back on court,” he said.

“The whole of last year was a waste for me, I didn’t play a whole lot of tennis.

“Having wasted that last year made me realise I needed to get back, I just hope in the coming years people can see me for the person I am.”

Tomic saw a rapid decline in 2017, first losing to David Ferrer in round one of the Brisbane International and then repeatedly failing win.

After going down to Italian Lorenzo Sonego in the Australian Open qualifying tournament he made the decision to appear on I’m a Celeb, only to pull the pin after just a handful of days.

The Australian Open disaster also saw his infamous “I count my millions” quip.

But the 25-year-old is now training on the Gold Coast with the aim of racking up a series of quick challenge wins.

After that he hopes to qualify for the French Open.

“(But) I’m ready to challenge myself and hopefully in the next year I can be in the Top 30,” Tomic told Moran.
