Woman who used magnet to steal $1k worth of Myer items placed on probation

A shoplifter has been placed on probation after she used a large magnet to remove security tags on $1000 worth of items at a Brisbane department store.

A WOMAN who used a large magnet to remove the security tag off clothes, before stealing them from a Brisbane city department store, has been placed on probation.

Rebeckah Pavlovich, 31, pleaded guilty in Brisbane Magistrates Court today to stealing more than $1000 worth of clothes from Myer in Brisbane city on February 10.

She also pleaded guilty to possession of an instrument, a magnet, used to commit the stealing offence.

On February 10, a Myer Brisbane city staff member saw a man and woman acting suspiciously as they selected a number of clothing items, the court heard.

Police prosecutor, Sgt Kylie Vanderbyl, said the security staff member followed Pavlovich into the change rooms.

Sgt Vanderbyl said the staff member heard a clicking noise, which was the sound of the magnet being used to remove the security tag from the clothes.

Pavlovich came out of the change rooms carrying a black shoulder bag, but she had no clothing in her hands.

Pavlovich was stopped after she left the store and police found a large magnet in her bag and clothing without any security tags.

Sgt Vanderbyl said the stolen clothes, valued at $1087, were recovered.

Magistrate Noel Nunan said there seemed to be a degree of professionalism involved in the stealing, with the use of the large magnet.

“She managed to remove those tags on some valuable dresses,” he said.

The court heard Pavlovich had previous criminal history for similar stealing and had committed the latest offences while on 15 months’ probation.

Pavlovich’s lawyer said she had been suffering from mental illness and had been using methylamphetamines at the time of the offences.

He said she had the delusion at the time that her father owned the Myer store and she was entitled to the property she stole.

Pavlovich had since undergone drug rehabilitation.

Mr Nunan said Pavlovich had a history of shoplifting and had been on probation and was supposed to be behaving herself when she stole the clothes.

“This has got to stop,” Mr Nunan told Pavlovich.

“At the moment you’re on a path to be disappearing through that door there,” he said, indicating the entry to the court cells.

Mr Nunan convicted Pavlovich and sentenced her to 15 months’ probation, telling her: “You make sure this shoplifting stops.”
