In what has been described as a “disappointing” act, a vandal has tarnished a much-loved community facility in Caboolture.
The Caboolture Region Environmental Education Centre (CREEC) was vandalised early on Sunday morning, which left extensive graffiti damage over the outdoor classroom and a burned wheelie bin and water tank.
Council to give CREEC a major upgrade including a new play area
Moreton Bay Councillor Tony Latter took to social media describing the damage inflicted on the property as actions that have “no space for this behaviour” in the community.
“This is a wanton, deliberate, criminal attack and I want to see these perpetrators prosecuted and I know the community does too,” Cr Latter said.
“CREEC is one of the best community facilities in our area with a café that’s operated by the local Lions Club, and it’s enormously popular over the school holidays; so this couldn’t have come at a worse time.”
The CREEC, which have recently reopened subject to government and social distancing requirements, is situated on an 18ha reserve, supporting environmental education and recreation for the community.
Cr Tony Latter told The Courier-Mail that any attack on community infrastructure is an attack on the community.
“Fortunately we have CCTV at the site and police are already investigating, but I urge anyone with information or who might have seen anything to come forward,” Cr Latter said.
“We recently purchased 18 new portable CCTV camera units and these have proven to be a successful deterrent against everything from petty crime and vandalism to illegal dumping.
“They’ve also helped our investigating officers’ track down perpetrators.”
The CCTV footage has captured a man they believe may be able to assist the police a spokesperson said.
A police spokesperson says investigations are still underway but anyone that recognises the person or has any information that might assist is urged to contact them.
“These are solar-powered mobile units with three cameras on each pole to capture all angles, we deploy them at strategic locations to catch criminals,” Cr Latter said.
The graffiti has been cleaned and the water tank replacement is underway.
Community members took to Facebook to share their disappointment, with one local writing: “Facilities such as the Creec are few and far between”.
Another wrote: “(I) love taking my kids here. Why would anyone do that?”
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident during the early hours of Sunday, November 22 is urged to contact Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
