Man charged with dangerous driving after woman’s body found

A man has been charged with multiple offences after the body of a young mother-of-five was discovered near the Pacific Motorway on the Gold Coast on Saturday night, but investigators are still trying to work out how she died.

A man has been charged after the body of a woman was found beside a Gold Coast motorway on Saturday night.

At 9.30pm on October 17 police attended the Pacific Motorway near exit 54 southbound after reports that a car was parked dangerously.

Police noticed the vehicle had been damaged and they began a search.

The body of 32-year-old Tammara Macrokanis was found by PolAir, using infra-red cameras, about 4km away from the parked car.

Police investigations to determine how she died are continuing.

A police spokesman said she had been walking on the side of the highway when she was hit by a vehicle.

An Upper Coomera man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for medical treatment before being dischared and taken to the watchhouse.

The 31-year-old man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death while adversely affected, disqualified driving, driving uninsured vehicle and driving an unregistered vehicle.

He will appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.

Ms Macrokanis’ family have since set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the mother-of-five’s funeral.

“We are completely shattered and still seeking answers around the circumstances of her death,” it says.

“While Tammara hasn’t been dealt the easiest path in life, she recently turned her life around and was doing amazing. We were all so proud of her.”

Ms Macrokanis’ mother Penney Macrokanis on Sunday posted to social media that her daughter had been visiting family on the Gold Coast prior to her death.

Ms Macrokanis lived in Casino and previously worked at the popular local Casino Returned Servicemen’s Memorial Club.

“R. I. P my eldest baby, I never in my wildest dreams thought you would leave us in this way,” Penney Macrokanis said of her daughter.

“Your 5 beautiful children and your family love you with all our hearts and now you are gone forever. Till we meet again, Love you eternally Mum.”

She later posted: “Missing you so, so much my baby girl, life is never going to be the same without you, your arguments, your arrogance and ignorance”.

“I hated the bad times we’ve had but loved our good times immensely. I can’t believe you’re gone, I’m just so f----ing numb and empty without you and am never going to be able to tell you I love you and how proud of you I am ever again.”
