A MAN has been arrested after he allegedly stole a five-tonne Woolworths grocery delivery truck and led police on a chase south of Brisbane last night.
Police say the man stole the Woolworths branded truck from Cornubia, in Logan, about 5.15 yesterday.
The truck was doing a home delivery, with resident Chrissy McMath saying the ordeal was hard to watch.
There was “a blue car, they drove past and then turned around and the passenger got out and looked at the back of the truck then jumped in.”
“The Woolworths man ran out to find his truck driving away. He and my husband then ran after him,” Mrs McMath said.
Police spotted the truck on the Mt Lindesay Highway about 8, and they say it was driven on footpaths, through bushland and on the wrong side of the road as the driver took measures to avoid them.
The truck was stopped when police used tyre stingers, but not before it swerved at one police car and backed into another one. Police say both vehicles were damaged.
Major roads were closed as a result of the chase, but have since been reopened.
A 29-year-old Loganlea man has been charged with four counts of wilful damage of police property and one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence and failing to dispose of a syringe.
He is expected to appear at Beenleigh Magistrates Court today.
