Prisoners at Woodford Correctional Centre northwest of Brisbane have been involved in a riot-like incident this afternoon with parts of the jail locked down, according to officers.
The Courier-Mail understands prisoners in a secure unit of the jail were smashing items and officers used gas on at least one of them.
Sections of the jail were understood to be temporarily locked down during the incident, which was described by staff as a riot, but which was originally classed as “code yellow”, meaning officers needed help.
Officers said the incident escalated to being classed as being technically a “code black” riot, however Queensland Corrective Services has disputed this tonight.
After the incident a number of prisoners were taken out of the unit and placed in the detention unit, according to officers.
It’s unclear what the riot was over however an officer said a number of inmates may have drunk prison-made brew.
A Queensland Corrective Services spokeswoman said one prisoner was subdued with chemical agents after being non-compliant.
“No officers were injured in the incident,” she said.
It comes just days after Corrective Services charged 45 people over a massive riot at Capricornia jail near Rockhampton last year.
