The death of a woman who died after allegedly being stabbed multiple times by a man who then took her car and crashed it on the Bruce Highway in far north Queensland is being treated as a domestic violence murder.

The woman suffered critical stab wounds during the incident, initially believed to be a carjacking, outside of Innisfail in far north Queensland.

It is understood the woman, in her 50s, ran to a nearby house for help around 4.15pm on Friday after being stabbed multiple times in the lower torso during the incident outside.

Emergency crews were called to an address where the woman was located with life threatening stab wounds. Despite efforts from the crews, she died at the scene.

According to police, the incident happened at Spina CT in Mighell where officers conducted a welfare check and found a woman with life threatening injuries.

A man allegedly left in a vehicle before police arrived.

A police spokesman said that a short time later, around 4.30pm, a car crashed with a truck on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket and a man has fled into a nearby area.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

“Police have closed the highway in an attempt to locate the man,” the spokesman said.

Several police crews searched the area with an man — who allegedly tried to steal a car from another woman nearby — was taken into custody on Friday evening.

The woman was not physically injured during the incident.

“A man is in custody … Residents are still urged to avoid the area, while investigations continue into what has occurred. The Highway remains closed. There is no further threat to public safety,” Queensland Police Service posted to social media just before 7pm.

Just after 6pm, police arrested a 51-year-old man without incident near the highway at Sandy Pocket.

Detective Acting Inspector Alina Bell said the pair were believed to be in a de facto relationship and the man was known to police.

“The man is previously believed to have lived at the address but not currently,” she said.

Ms Bell commended the efforts of witnesses who provided first aid to the woman.

“All attempts were made to revive the woman at the scene but unfortunately this was unsuccessful,” she said.

“Any event where someone loses their life it’s a tragic situation and there are a number of support services available for people involved and the broader community.”

“If you know anyone impacted by domestic family violence we encourage you to report it to police and seek support services.”

Cassowary Coast Detectives have charged a 51-year-old Mighell man with one count of murder (domestic violence offence).

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 1.

Police will allege the man and woman were known to each other.

Investigations are ongoing to determine what further offences the man allegedly committed after he left the scene.

Police are appealing to witnesses, particularly anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam vision, to immediately come forward.
