Forensic investigators are consulting with traditional custodians after a skull was found by council workers in a national park near Longreach.
A Central West Patrol Group Inspector said workers on Monday were excavating a gravel pit in the Lochern National Park in Central West Queensland when they discovered the human remains and alerted police.
A police spokeswoman this afternoon confirmed investigations had concluded.
“The remains were examined by a Forensic Anthropologist and determined to be a pre-colonisation First Nations person,” the spokeswoman said.
“The remains have been respectfully returned to the traditional custodian from the Iningai Aboriginal Corporation.”
Earlier, Inspector Chris Smith had said further examination found the remains were of significant cultural importance.
“Representatives of the Iningai Aboriginal Corporation and others will be assessing the location at some stage today weather permitting,” Inspector Smith said.
“They will make a determination whether further excavation of that particular area will occur and make a determination that what has been found will be respectfully laid to rest in the area.”
A police spokeswoman confirmed the remains were located at 2.12pm on Monday.
