A neighbour has shared his attempt to extinguish a fire that tragically claimed the life of a person in a horror incident in the Whitsundays.
Troy Gordon, who lives across the road from the Sugarloaf property, was first on scene after he heard multiple banging noises last night.
“I left my place and saw the glow,” Mr Gordon said.
“I ran over there with my fire extinguisher but the fire was too intense.”
Mr Gordon, who moved to the Whitsundays six months ago, was shaken up over the tragedy.
Police confirmed someone died after a fire broke out in a cabin on Star Drive just after 7pm Wednesday.
Fire crews arrived to find the dwelling fully engulfed by flames.
A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said multiple crews attended the scene.
“The fire was contained by 7.50pm and they had it out by 8.15pm,” the spokeswoman said.
Paramedics were called to the scene and despite efforts, a person who was in the residence at the time died at the scene.
Police said nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution; however, no one else was physically injured.
The property will remain a crime scene as officers work to confirm the identity of the occupant.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
