Payne Haas’s mum Uiatu “Joan” Taufua on hourly staff observations in Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre

There are concerns for the welfare of Payne Haas’s mum in jail as the Bronco’s star breaks his silence in a cryptic social media post.

Broncos star Payne Haas has broken his silence amid concerns for his mother’s welfare in jail since she was charged over a horrific Gold Coast car crash which killed three people.

Haas’s mother, Uiatu “Joan” Taufua, has been charged with three counts of manslaughter as well as dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and evading police after last week’s crash at Bonogin which wiped out almost an entire family.

The crash claimed the lives of retired doctor Chris Fawcett, 79, his partner Susan Zimmer, 70, and her daughter Steffanie, 35.

The Courier-Mail has been told that Taufua is on hourly staff observations at Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre to check on her welfare.

The observations are deemed “medium risk”. She’s understood to be in a normal cell with access to her belongings.

“The psychologist who interviewed her would have made that assessment and 60 minutes are only deemed as medium risk,” an officer said.

Taufua, who was seriously injured in the crash, had been on parole for the violent assault of two bouncers at the Gold Coast’s Star Casino and was hauled back to prison on Wednesday before she could make a scheduled bail application.

Haas has laid low since the crash and was a conspicuous no-show when the Broncos resumed training on Wednesday.

But on Thursday, he posted an Instagram story of a video featuring US rapper Future.

“I’m trying to get to where I’m going and ain’t nobody going to stop me,” Future says in the reel, taken from the @hustlersnthehood motivational site.

“Whatever going on, the talking and the captions or whatever, the memes … you can’t stop me because it’s the vision that I have and it’s goals that I set out for myself that I gotta get there no matter what.”
